We should always remember, as we are reading the Bible, that each particular passage was first written to someone else beside us. There was an original audience of one or more for whom this was meant originally. In order to interpret the passage correctly and apply it to ourselves appropriately, we must understand what the message meant for its first audience. To do that, we should try, as much as possible, to understand the people and the circumstances at that time. What were the people like? With what were they struggling? What was happening at the time? What was God concerned about for them? The passage and the context surrounding the passage, as well as a good study Bible, can help answer those questions. Once we have these answers, then we should ask, "What is there about these people and their circumstances that is similar to me and my situation?" Now we are ready to apply God’s Word to ourselves.
